Re: [RC] [RC] Just curious about LD's entry price - heidi

Another aspect of curiosity - so....the vets who work the rides command
the same fee if they work 25 or 50 miles? Is it a daily rate so that
if a ride has
say 4 vets, they are all paid by the day even if they only vet the 25?
Just
wondering - a new rider asked me about the vets, the arrangements etc
and I didn't know.

It depends on the ride. Usually, since there is a 50-miler as well, the
vets work for the entire day. The RM tries to schedule the start time so
that the bulk of the LDs tend to hit the checks at different times than
the bulk of the 50s. Depending on the ride layout, the vets may well have
to remain until the riders of longer distances are all through their check
anyway. Occasionally a ride is set up in such a way that perhaps one vet
can leave mid-afternoon when all the LDs are done--but that might save the
RM only $100 or so. Spread across even a small LD entry (say, 25) that's
only $4 less per LD rider saved by having that vet go home.

In general, both when I was vetting a lot of rides and when I was managing
a lot of rides and paying other vets, the fee was either for the entire
weekend or for being a day vet. Unless the vet lives close by, a reduced
fee for only part of the day isn't very practicable.
