Re: [RC] kicking, leaping etc. - Chris Paus

Jonnie and Truman, I have to put my .02 worth in here
and agree.

I do not agree that the horse needs a tom thumb or
other new bit, unless the bit he is in currently hurts
his mouth.

In fact, with a TT, I can just about guarantee the
horse will get worse.

This horse reminds me of my Starman, only he was 10
and behaving this way. Everyone told me stronger bit,
stronger bit. Well, every new bit I tried, just upped
the ante. he'd be good for a ride or two until he
figured out how to evade it.

We went around and round until I took some time off
from trail work and competiton and went to a classical
dressage instructor. He worked with me on his horse,
and worked with Star separately, going back to ground
work. When we got back together, it was a much nicer
ride for both of us.

I know Angie is a good rider and a thoughtful one, but
it seems to me that this horse might be rushed into
work a little fast.

IMHO, when a horse rebels like this it's a clear
message that something ain't right.

Angie, you are creative. You are a teacher. If you had
a rebellious but cute and endearing little boy in your
class how would you handle him? Don't you usually find
out that when a kid is a brat, something is missing in
his life? somethign is wrong at home, or amiss
somewhere.

Same with your horse. I'm sure you can find the key to
redirect his energy from running amok into trees and
guide it into good trail work.

Good luck!

Sometimes, those that we find easy going, and easy
to break, end up having
some holes in their training. They seem to take to
everything so easy, that
we get in a hurry to be able to get on them and
ride. I'd look at your over
all training program on this horse, and analyze what
you have missed in the
process. Sometimes we need to go back, to be able to
continue forward.
