I had to deal with it many many years ago.  I went one day to the barn and my horse was 3 legged.  She did not want to put any weight on her right hind leg.  I had to keep her stall bound for 4 months.  After that low excercises.  I don't remember exactly how long until I rode her but she ended up not having any problems out of the leg.
