Re: [RC] Standardbreds and Part Standardbreds in Endurance - Karen Sullivan

I am wondering overall what the longevity of soundness is....since so
many seem to race for years.....do they tend to be a breed that can
"power trot" forever without suspensory injuries or other leg problems?
Is this a breed where the "crooked leg; badly conformed" have been
mostly weeded out?

I just got an email that from someone that said that
he thought that crosses might be OK, but a straight
Standardbred would never do well. I think my guy
disproves this theory.

Well, yours and several others who have done even more, and HAVE been
fairly consistent front runners.

You are right that the bigger ones can have heat dissipation issues. The
other thing that has proved to be a problem with some is trying to ride
WITH the top Arabs--they do far better riding their own ride, as they move
much differently and will be stressed by either holding back their own
trot to trot with slower-trotting horses or to push it to the max trying
to trot while others canter. It is like having transmissions that shift
at different speeds, and trying to go the same speed with them--when the
Standardbred is at the right "RPMs" he is quicker than a trotting Arab but
slower than a cantering Arab, and in general, tends to do better just
staying even at that speed, whereas the Arab will do better shifting gears
from time to time. I've seen quite a few who seemed to be mediocre when
their riders tried to ride with others riding different breeds, but who
became really stellar endurance horses when ridden alone at their own
speed.
