[RC] Saddlebred Vs. Standardbred - Carolyn Burgess

OK, I admit to being dumb! What is the difference
between a Standardbred
and a Saddlebred? Are they both cart-trotting
horses? Just curious as my
new guy is registered 3/4 Arab and 1/4 Saddlebred,
and Pinto (and can be
registered NSH). And while we are at it, what is
NSH? I bought him for his
mind, not for how he is registered?

Lonnie

Lonnie:

Standardbreds are the races horses that race in
harness. They are either trotters or pacers (more
common, race faster in harness and are more desirable
for racing since there is more money in pacing races).
Saddlebreds are also a gaited breed, they are shown
under saddle, most notably in saddleseat, but they are
also driving horses.

A NSH (National Show Horse) is a horse that is a half
Arab/half Saddlebred horse that is eligible for the
NSH registry. You can also breed two NSH to get
another NSH, but they can't be less than 1/4 of one of
the breeds nor more than 3/4 of the other breed. You
can also get a Pinto Saddlebred or a Pinto NSH.
Pintoing (is that a word?) is one of the colors that
is not allowed under USTA color guidelines. Although
pintoing is allowed in other Standardbred registries
(New Zealand is one of them) it is not under USTA.
The acceptable colors for a USTA Standardbred are:
black, grey, roan, brown, black, and of course, bay.
Hope this helps.
