RE: [RC] [RC] skin problem - Chris Paus

I just went through a horrible case of rainrot with
two of my horses. finally had to holler for help from
the vet.

The critter that causes it is called Dermatophilus
congolensis

It is susceptible to antibiotics. In severe cases it
can be treated systemically with penicillin or
gentomycin.

My vet sent me home with a bottle of nolvasan scrub.
It has done the trick. I clipped the hair short in the
affected area. dermatophilus congolensis needs an
anerobic condition to flourish, so adding light and
air will discourage it! Then I picked off all the
scabs. That's a painstaking job, and the horses wince,
but it speeds healing. I scrubbed with the nolvasan
and let it sit on the skin for about 10 minutes before
rinsing off. I did this three days in a row and we
seem to have turned the corner and are healing now!

Of course, my boys look a bit moth eaten after my bad
scissors job, but as they say, the only difference
between a bad haircut and a good one is about two
weeks, LOL.

Sounds like rain rot. It's a fungal dermatitis.
You can try several
things-Shapley's MTG, Aloe Vera Juice, Listerine,
Desitin...My personal
preference is a capful (about a tablespoon) of
Captan powder (an antifungal
you buy at the hardware store-usually for tomatoes)
to a gallon of warm
water, spray often. Seems to work fastest (but if
someone else knowws
something better-I'm all ears!)
Faustina and her many white butted Appys (who seem
particularly prone to
rain rot!)

I have a skin problem with my little 6 yr. old
mare. It started with just a
few hard bumps about the size of a pencil
eraser....now it has spread to
the top of her entire hind quarters and some even
over on her back. Anyone
have an idea what this might be?
thanks,
Diane in MO
