RE: [RC] Skyrider saddle revisited - Ranelle Rubin

Rosalie,

I have three..and have ridden them exclusively on at least 10 different
horses from all kinds of Arabs to a few quarter horses and even a 17h
Tbred that I was working with..I have found them to fit all the above
horses. I said in an earlier post that the only time I had a problem
with them was when I was training a horse that was inverted and a bit
short backed. After I was able to get him moving "in frame" with his
back properly supporting the saddle (an me), he did great. He completed
Tevis in 2003 with Mr Hasumi in 23rd place with that saddle, has
completed 3 other 50's with a Skyhorse (aka Skyrider)with no issues. You
can rig them English or Western. What I did with mine was purchase a
biothane girth from Sportack, double the biothane billet straps that
came with the saddle and run them through one brass ring. This then
became the ring to attach the girth. This allows for three points of
adjustment with a center fire style rigging. I can send you a picture
when I get home next week. I am in AZ now on business. I tighten the
girth before getting on, then if I need to tighten while mounted, I can
reach under my left or right leg and tighten the top billet straps
(front or back) while mounted.

Feel free to ask any questions..this saddle is not for everyone, I
happen to love it. I don't have to have one for every horse, just every
person. One thing you want to watch is the condition of your inside
Skito padding. I does need to be replaced if it gets hard from sweat. I
use a Woolback pad under the saddle..the endurance round barrel with the
high front. If you have problems with the pad slipping back, you can do
what I did and sew a fleece roll onto the front (dental floss for
thread:-)....

Good Luck,
Ranelle

Subject: [RC] Skyrider saddle revisited

Hi all -

Not too long ago, someone mentioned the Skyrider saddle. I checked it
out online and spoke with Colin Dangaard (who now sells a version made
in India), and the upshot is that I've ordered it.

I've searched RC archives, and can only find reference to the Skyrider
in posts from the years 1997-1999. I don't know if these are the
original or the re-makes, in any event, there was not much info.

I'm wondering if anyone here has used these, what did they like/not
like, what sort of pad did you find worked well for you, and what kind
of girth. The girthing system is a "tackaberry", which seems very
similar to the "Y" rigging some of you use on western saddles. I'll
have it for a two-week trial and would like to try it in as many
situations as I can and (since it's main attraction for me was the
promise that it would fit many different horse-shapes) on a variety of
horses, my own and my friends'.

I come from an english saddle background, not much experience with
western and none with aussie.

Thanks!
Rosalie
