Re: [RC] [RC] [RC] WEIGHT DIVISIONS - terry banister

Yes, the flat-track jockeys all weigh within a couple of pounds of each other, and the saddles are nearly the same, probably only varying by ounces in weight. So WHY do they weigh them together?
I was not "wanting" anything, other than to know the reason why they do it.

And in these races each and every rider has the same amount of weight for the ride. And the same type of saddle. Are you wanting there to be one type of saddle for these events? Are you wanting each division to weigh the same? Then some people will have to add extra weight to their saddles to meet the weight of the heavest rider in their division.

I am going to go back to weigh the rider. That will determine the division the rider will ride in. They can then choose the tack and extras that they want to carry on the ride.

But the saddle weight DOES matter, regardless of whether someone chooses a
heavy saddle, light saddle or no saddle - the horse is still carrying the
weight. What are we judging here - the what the horse is carrying or how
fat or thin the rider is? I feel it's what the horse is carrying that's
important because he's (she's) the one that's lugging everything, saddle,
bottles, hardware store & rider, over the course, so it's ALL that
weight that wears on the horse, not just the rider's weight.

After reading many peoples comments. I feel just weigh the rider and the rider's clothing. Don't worry about saddles since so many people have different tastes in Saddles. Don't weigh water or food since they will be used during the ride. Do weigh the extra items that people choose to carry. It is their option to carry those items.

Riders have to ride the horse so weigh the rider only. If someone chose
to do a ride bareback it is there option and there would be no saddle to
weigh.

I'd rather keep the weight divisons the way they are. That way, more

Perhaps we should weight just the person and clothes (please wipe the
mud off your shoes!) and adjust the weight parameter accordingly.

One more item: I haven't seen much comment about my proposal to
reduce the
number of weight divisions from four to three (or even two). How
about it? If
we get some discussion going we can ask the Board to put it on the
agenda for
the Convention meeting, and maybe get it done for the 2006 season.
