[RC] resting heartbeat - Mary Orosz

I have a question about my horses resting heartbeat. I have a TWH with a resting rate of 44. He is heavily muscled, and needs to lose 150 lbs – an extremely easy keeper.  I trail ride him a lot around home.  I didn’t plan on using him as my endurance horse.  A year ago I got a 5 year old mustang.  She was probably the perfect weight when I got her.  She was green and I really enjoyed my TWH so her training was a hit and miss thing.  I started letting them have 24/7 pasture access this summer and she picked up a little weight.  I started riding her lately and love her gaits – so comfy!  I have been having a hard time hearing her heartbeat with the stethoscope so I wasn’t sure what her resting heartbeat was.  I just used a monitor on her and found that her resting heartbeat was 49-50.  I  haven’t had the weather to get her out and see what it is when she is working, but will be going out today to see how she does.  Should I just forget about using her for endurance? Do you thing it might go down as she gets conditioned and loses weight?  I was just planning on having a good time – not racing.

Thanks for the advice,

Mary
