Re: [RC] Gps thing again - Truman Prevatt

Actually for accuracy, you require signals from at least 4 birds simultaneously. With only 3 birds the units cannot solve for time and location (and 3 space) and have to default the location to sea lever on the WGS84 (World Geodetic System 1984 datum) geoid. So with 4 (or more) location in space and time can be calculated and accuracy is improved. Without at least 3 nothing can be calculated.

In forested areas of mountain terrain drop outs will occure and the distance calculated by GPS units will be short. This is a particular problem in easter hardwood forest where the tree leaves are about the right size for a nice reflector of the GPS signal - proper relationship between leaf size and wavelength. But of course it can't get through rock either.

On the other hand it should be fairly easy to integrate GPS into their unit since GPS chipsets are fairly inexpensive these days, but it does take some up front engineering and redesign.

Timex sends a different HR transmitter signal than Polar.... the signals

horses and how some are trying to adapt the Timex human transmitters to
horse use.

Polar Electro has told me that Polar is working on GPS but they are
concerned about the GPS signal dropouts since GPS require 3 satellites
to be accurate. If you are riding and you lose a GPS signal for awhile,
then the total distance covered shown on the HR monitor becomes
inaccurate.....for example, a 10 mile ride could show up as an 8.5 mile
ride.
