[RC] Back to endurance... - Chris Paus

I just want to offer a big bunch of kudos to Laura
Marshall and all her vets and volunteers who put on
the Sunflower Classic on Saturday.

Laura had to contend with some awful mud on trail and
did a pretty good job of rerouting us around the worst
of it. Our three year drought has been broken by a lot
of rain this year so the trails have been muddy all
summer. Then last week, we had three days straight of
rain just before the ride.

The trails she used are practically in my backyard and
I ride there a lot. I was a little sorry that people
from elsewhere didn't get to see some of the most
beautiful views, but Laura was right, it would have
been treacherous to send that many horses in some of
those spots.

Laura and her crew had the trails very well marked.
These can be confusing trails as there are lots of
cross trails that have been made and abandoned over
the years and the trails have lots of loops and twists
and turns to keep things interesting!

Laura fed her riders.. we had two fabulous meals in
camp. The vets were outstanding, the volunteers were
gracious and helpful. There were spotters and drag
riders to make sure we all were OK along the way.

The camping was great thanks to the hard work of local
volunteers who maintain and improve the park.

I just want to say thanks to everyone involved. I know
that Susan Keil is taking over the same ride next year
and I'm sure it will be a good one.

I just feel so lucky to live so close to good riding
areas and to be in the Central Region where we have so
darn many good rides to choose from! I can't go to
them all, so have to pick and choose. What a GOOD
problem to have!

Of course, if too many people find out about our well
kept secrets here, the midwest will be overrun with
west coasters, LOL! <BEG>
