Re: [RC] newbie question---what is a keyhole? - Kristen A Fisher

It is a place on a trail where you turn off and make a loop that ends up back at the original trail. It is usually done to add mileage or increase the scenic nature of the trail. There is usually a way inside the keyhole to "prove" that you did it [a spotter, a sticker, hole punch, whatever], because it would be very easy to simply skip that extra mileage and continue on the same trail.

I did an extra keyhole on that same ride because, IMO, they were not marked very clearly nor did they have clear indications where spotters/stickers were supposed to be gathered.

Okay..stupid newbie question here?  What is a keyhole on the trail?  Saw it in Dolly's post about missing them and am not sure what it is and how you make sure you don't miss them!
