Re: [RC] Fear when mounting - patricia

I learned this tactic from Julie and am an avid "carrot bribing, rewarding
mounter" to this day.....no nippers, either.

Subject: [RC] Fear when mounting

Because I have a few more years than most of you, I have had more time to
develop inventive ways to fall off. I have, however, been able to lessen the
frequency by using the old carrot trick. When I mount, my horses stand still
because they know they are going to get a carrot once I am settled in the
saddle
with both feet in the stirrups. This is obviously bribery, but it works.
Sometimes they get it from my left hand on their left side and sometimes from
the
right. This way they do not try reach for it by bending because they aren't
sure which side it is going to come from. It really works and it just takes a
couple of days and they get the picture. Some people are against hand feeding
a horse because they are afraid it will make a nipper of him. This has not
been a problem with my horses.
If your horse has a tendency to take off before you are settled in the
saddle, have someone else hold him the first few times you use the carrot
bribe,
but you give him the carrot.
I hope this works for others who feel vulnerable when mounting their horses.
