[RC] Arabian Mules - k s swigart

Technically speaking, this cross will not produce a mule. A mule is a
cross between a mare (female horse) and a jack (male donkey). If you do
the cross the other way (i.e. a jenny with a stallion), then what you
will get is a hinny not a mule.

Around here, it is not a very common practice and I understand that the
result is not exactly the same (but since I have never seen or worked
with a hinny, I couldn't tell you why).

Apparently one of the reasons that it isn't a very common practice is
that it is difficult to get a jenny pregnant with a stallion. There is
a paper on it here:
http://www.publish.csiro.au/nid/44/paper/RDv16n1Ab140.htm So it may not
just be the owner of the stallion that you can't tell, but you need to
not tell the stallion either.

However, if you want to produce an Arabian mule, you will have to breed
one of your mares, not your donkey.
