I have a friend who's horse spreads his legs apart for her to mount.

That sounds... ummmm... nevermind.

I'm pretty sure you're talking about a horse that "parks out."  Or
whatever the current terminology is for that.

It's common in gaited breeds like TWHs and ASBs to show them in
hand parked out, but its foundation is in having the horse stand
still for mounting and dismounting.  Every once in a while I'll
see someone with a TWH that has their horse park out for mounting
and I think it's great to see something traditional like that. :)
