New Trail Riding Location
Posted: Sep 16, 2004 at 1:51 PM
Alabama's Forever Wild Program ( Funded by natural gas and oil proceds) has purchased a large tract of land on the Cumberland plateau near Guntersville Al. The tract is 20,000+ and has been opened to horse back riding. There is one offical trail which is 16 Miles+/- long. The trail is well marked and starts at a nice trail head with large gravel parking lot capable of holding 50+ rigs. Located on state hwy 79 2 miles south of the Tenn. Line. Trail head allows camping but there are no facilites. Trail follows the contour lines down into a canyon where the walls of Jerico are located. Primitive camping for horses is allowed at bottom of canyon. First 1/3 of trail is 20'+ wide and gently sloping. second half is sloping to steep but still a good trail. final 1/3 is very rocky with open caves or sink holes on the side of the trail but still well marked. When rock field ends you have a steep and muddy desent into the the canyon. The canyon bottom is very scenic and has a good trail with one creek crossing. When you reach the head of the canyon you must dis- mount and walk .5 miles up to the walls of Jerico. If the waters not up it is easyer to walk up the creek than take the trail. NOTE: your horse should be in good shape if your going to make it back up the mountain to the trail head. Have Fun!!
