Dixie, the answer to your question is - it depends.

You want your horses to be eating what they need for the 
conditions they are living in.  If you live where the
weather is the same all year, this would mean that you
stop feeding them so much if you stop riding them or 
limit their turnout.

However, I live in Minnesota, where it is very cold in
the winter.  So even though I don't ride much in the 
winter, my horses need more energy (food) to stay warm.
Also, in the winter, there is no grass in the pasture,
so I need to give them more hay to make up for that.

I generally feed my horses all they can eat hay, with a 
little bit of commercial pellet feed.  In the winter, 
they eat more hay. If they start looking too fat or too skinny, I adjust the 
pellets.  But generally they mainly eat
hay, which is what horses are designed to run on, and they 
self-adjust according to what they need.

Talk to your vet about what might be appropriate for the amount
of exercise your horses receive and the conditions in your
area.
