Re: [RC] physiology & conditioning - Ed & Wendy Hauser

Most heavily campaigned horses in the Midwest do 50 mile rides every other week all season.  This, of course, is not the first or second year of competition.

When competing this way, I give my horse and myself, one week off.  I then would ride the next weekend and perhaps lightly on Tuesday.   I found that my horses have gained condition throughout the season with this type of schedule.  Lameness issues seem to stack up in September  and October for competitors.  This tells me that a 50 every other week is about as often as horses can stand without lameness issues and that condition builds in this type of schedule.
