Re: [RC] rattlesnakes - Barbara McCrary

Why couldn't the best endurance prospect we ever had have to be bitten on
the pastern instead of the nose? The recovery took 8 months (for the wound)
and his soundness is still problematical (if that's the correct word). It
just about broke my heart. We still have him, hoping for some sort of
miracle.

Anybody know of a state where there are NO rattlesnakes. That's where I
am moving, unless they have hurricanes.

Poor Liya is the latest casualty. She is on Banamine, Pennicilin and
Gentacin but she has a fat lip. And I have to get up at 4:30 for the
next 12 days to go shoot her up because it has to be done twice a
day.....She is taking is gracefully though. This is the third horse
this year......mb

Been a bad year for snakes here as well. We likewise had a 2-year-old
filly snakebit in the nose. She looked like she was wearing a basketball
on the end of her face for a few days. The young man who works for my
neighbor came up and checked on her for me a couple of times the first day
while I was at work. He said she looked like Snuffleupagus, or however
you spell it. Hit her hard with banamine and dex the first day, and put
her on SMZ rather than penicillin/gentomycin. She only needed the
banamine for about 4 days, and kept up the SMZ for about 10 days, and she
recovered quite uneventully. Nice thing about the SMZ is that it is broad
spectrum but is given orally and only once a day, so she didn't even get
very mad at me...
