[RC] Thanks! - V.Roush - Jonni Jewell

The key to a saddle for distance trail riding, is one that fits your horse
for mile after mile, and one you can ride well in. A saddle that makes a
rider uncomfortable, often makes a rider ride poorly, which can effect the
horse. I am also preferring English saddles these days. Don't worry about
how many rings they have on them etc. You can have those added to any
saddle. You do not have to buy one that is specific to "trail" riding. Many
riders have used "off the shelf" all purpose saddles, dressage saddles etc.
for years. Start with what you have, and see if it will work for you. It may
or may not. If it doesn't, you can then inquire if it is something you can
change to it, to make it work, or start looking for something different.
There are some saddle companies that make English style saddles, that are
considered "trail" saddles. The best thing to do when considering a new
saddle, is to go to a ride and either watch, or volunteer. Meet some riders,
and feel free to ask questions. Most are willing to offer their thoughts on
the tack and horses they have chosen for this sport.
