[RC] to shoe or not to shoe: doesn't have to be a religious debate - A. Perez

I think we all know that barefooting may work for some horses,
not for others. I don't think the folks who 'brag' about their
success are saying it works for everyone. I think the point
they are trying to make is that one should not automatically
assume that ALL horses MUST be shod.

And not all horse can go barefoot all the time: my guy is fine
barefoot sometimes, less so at others. Last summer with all
that rain he was ouchy on gravel. In past drier summers I could
ride him barefoot over anything (including those big base-ball
sized rocks used to buid road bases) and he never took a sore
step.

And no, the part of the hoof the nails go through is NOT
'living tissue' any more than your hair or fingernails are. The
lamina is 'living', but the horn is dead cuticle, just like your
hair. Think how painful haircuts would be otherwise!

Moral of the story: don;t get wrapped up in dogma: listen to
your horse and do what works for him at the moment, and be ready
to try something else if it stops working down the road.
