Re: [RC] Pudgy Pony - Julie Fuller

Beccy,

Something I have always done when I don't have a lot of time to spend exercising horses: Chase them around in the pasture or pen! Like lounging, only easier on me, and the horses seem to enjoy it immensely! I like to chase all of them at least 30 minutes, but an hour is better. I work all 4 this way. It's good for me too! Sometimes it's in the pen (80 x 80) sometimes in the 9 acre pasture, which is a hell of a work-out for everyone as it is ALL HILL. (The dog helps too, all 200 pounds of him)

Another way I work ponies is to drive them..... If you've got a few roads which aren't heavily traveled, you can put a decent work-out on a pony in short order, entertain your neighbors and kids, and have a hell of a good time!

I try to do as little hauling as possible, I feel it's silly to spend two to three hours hitching, loading, driving and vice versa to get in a ride! Such a waste of time! I ride in my field a lot, on the roads, I drive, I chase... and save the days when I do have a lot of time for the LONG rides. You'd be surprised at how much you can work your horses in very little time, and very close to home.

That said, I've got to bake some cornbread, then jump on the pony and search the pasture for busted blanket straps! *grin*

Julie
