I have a beautiful book called "The Performance Horse, a Photographic Tribute". In the section on Polo Ponies is says:  "... in high-goal polo, mares are the preferred competition horse. We keep over a hundred head of horses in training for our team, and of those, six are geldings... when you have to 'go to the bottom' of your horse, mares have the heart to give their all. They'll go until they drop. A gelding knows how to protect himself better. It's harder to get him to give everything."

My last three mares have more heart than all my geldings have rolled together. There is no quit in my teeny tiny mare. Just steel. And she loves me like no other horse I have owned. I know that is anthropomorphizing, but we really are bonded.

Your post reminds me of most women I know. :) They will go until they drop, care for everyone else and give birth on top of it. Not to insult the men, but women are made of stern stuff too. Mares are fantastic. I'd never turn down a good horse because of sex or color, but I do love my girls. Dogs too.
