[RC] horse behavior--trying to interpret - winsumjo

I have noticed that my now 9 yr old mare has been challenging her now 23 yr
old companion. She is getting some wounds because of it too. When I got
her as an unbroke 4yr old she would leap out of his way if he just looked at
her. Over the years she started to just saunter away with a flip of the
tail, but now she is challenging him and pinning her ears and only finally
moves when he reaches out to bite her. Sometimes he does get her as she
doesn't get out of the way fast enough.
I have been competing her lightly the past several years and I have noticed
that she is also braver on the trail, used to spook at everything. She also
will make faces and pin ears if another horse comes up along side of her.
It's kind of neat to see her finally assert herself. Louise
