Re: [RC] Maryanne Stroud Gabbani - Maryanne Stroud Gabbani

I've never heard of any such markings for Bedouin horses. Most Bedouin families wouldn't have had very many I suspect because the grazing in much of the peninsula isn't up to having herds of horses. So just like they kept track of their kids, they probably kept track of their horses. We don't brand any horses here either other than the stamps that the EAO and the private studs use. The most that I've seen on camels is markings shaved into the hair. Maybe they did that.

Hi Maryanne,
Do you know if there were any permanent markings used by the Bedouins to identify their horses? A recent thread on ridecamp dealt with freeze branding. After some research on freeze branding it looks like you can go in 2 directions, make your own brand and register it or have a company use their own registered combination of numbers and symbols. I'm curious if historically, branding or some other form of marking was used by nomads to claim their horses.
I lost a horse 7 years ago at a ride in Ft. Valley, VA and after no trace of her for days most thought she was stolen. This has weighed heavily on me that I had no way to call the auctions to give them a visible permanent mark to positively identify her. I think it would be nice to use a symbol rather than the standard marking of the neck so I can think of no one closer to the source to find out if there was such a thing done in nomadic groups.
