as for the feeding program, I've raised lots of foals
and used to be pretty neurotic about supplements and
special feeds. I quit all that and now just feed them
lots of top quality hay, good pasture and just
handfuls of a 12 percent grain. The grain mostly is to
get them used to coming in to the paddock and being
with me. They grow and thrive without putting on more
weight than their legs and joints can take.

Just one more comment here--the #1 cause of DJD (developmental joint
disease) in young horses is excess carbohydrate intake.  It far outranks
mineral imbalances or deficiencies or any other causes.
