Re: [RC] THANKS!! - Karen Sullivan

4 years isn't bad....

Some years ago my daugther and I saw an ad posted around town for an 8 year
old
black Arab gelding for $600 with a lot of trail experience.

Of course we went to look. He was a cute little guy, more of a black bay,
that a fellow
said he had done a lot of hill riding, had owned the horse two
years.....bought the horse
when it was 6....previous owned had done some endurance, etc.

No papers, I looked a the horses teeth; teeth looked relatively short,
somewhat odd,
it was really hard to guess an age; horse had a small mouth, small teeth.

Then my daugther got on him. Horse had extremely long-shanked hackamore and
went
off down the driveway at at trot, head straight up in the air....almost ran
my daugher into
some trees. Something was starting to look familiar about this horse.

I asked his name.....darned if he didn't have the same name as a horse a
friend had owned
years and years ago. I asked who this guy had bought the horse from.....he
described a
sort of generic, wild, black haired middle aged woman who could have been
any of 3 people
who might have owned this horse.

I looked at the horse carefully and then went home and looked at the photos
of the horse my
friend had owned.....darned if it wasn't the same horse.....who had been age
10 in 1992...making
him, when we looked around age 20.

Strangest thing....the horse didn't look or act 20.....and the teeth sure
didn't look that old, but it
sure made me go back and study teeth again!!!

Anyway, no papers on a horse; well, every time they get sold they get
younger and younger.

When I got a young mare, no papers some years ago I desperately tried to
track her back to breeder,
with no luck. The age the people told me seemed to agree with the second
owner I tracked her back
to.....but one of the first things I did was haul her to a good vet for a
general exam, shots and a good look
at the teeth. I asked specifically for the vet to state on her chart how
old she was; and at age 6, not near
7.....it was easy to tell......and I made this info available when I sold
the horse.....hopefully if she is ever sold
again that will go with her.....

You guys are great. You gave me all the info I needed. Shame the lady
who bought him didn't have this info 4 years ago. Seems they cropped 4
years off his age when the last seller "lost" the papers. I'm surprised
they didn't change his name. This may help us be able to get him. :-))

Shouldn't have any trouble identifying him. They have x-rays showing
he's missing a rear splint bone. I have the splint bone. >g<
