Re: [RC] 'pound dog' mentality for horses? - heidi

I'm not anti-breeder but in this sport it is where the rubber meets the
road that is important. You can't ride the registration across the
finish line and there are very few vets that I know that would not pull
because you show them the papers to convience them that horses in your's
 line never get lame.

Truman, you and others are dancing around the point here. We are ALL
after the horses with the necessary traits. Selection is a game of odds.
A horse with ancestry consistent with success in the sport, at least in my
experience, has about 3 chances on 4 of being a success at it, whereas if
you're lucky, the auction selection has, maybe, one chance in 20. NO ONE
here will argue against the successful horse who isn't bred for it--there
is the "extreme" in the cases of the pedigrees that tend to be
unsuccessful as well, and if you are fortunate enough to get one that got
really lucky in the roll of the dice, then more power to you. The
take-home message here is that you will increase your chances of finding
the very sorts of horses you are describing by going to breeders who
actually select for those traits, and who understand the ancestry of their
horses so that they know where to look to find those traits in breeding
stock.

In athletics - human and equine the world is made up of Cinderella
stories.

Well, no, it really isn't. It is made up of people (or horses, in this
case) with talent and drive who did their homework and made the most of
the fact that they were talented. The reason that Cinderella stories make
the news is because they ARE the rarities. If they were commonplace, they
wouldn't make the news.
