Re: [RC] sweeps & auctions - Bette Lamore

You're in good company about buying a horse with Sweepstakes nomination, all things being equal, Truman. I believed I mentioned that Valerie Kanavy won $60,000 Sweepstakes one year--- or was that $30,000 she told me----Val? At any rate, my memory may fail me re: the exact amount, but it was a sizable amount of change and I was VERY impressed. So much so that I bit the bullet and nominated Riverdance-- and believe me, it is a sacrifice-- $3500! The good news is that clients who are serious about FEI events can win significant money and when they do, a portion comes back to the breeder. No, the breeder usually does not become rich from these paybacks, but it is a nice thing to do for one's clients. People in racing also nominate for Sweepstakes as there is significant money in that sport as well--- it's not just for SHOW anymore ;-)
Bette and Bunny (who wants to be nominated, just because...)

Boy you sure don't like any other Arabian breeders - if they don't follow your party line. I very seriously doubt that you were presented the stone tablets on Mount Sinai on how to breed the ultimate Arabian horse. I am sure that Shelia Varian breeds a good using horse and I am also sure many of hers are sweepstakes nominated. I know Linda Fisher from Denver breeds some great distance horses and I am sure some of hers are sweepstakes nominated. I am also sure there are others out there. Would I buy a horse just because it were sweepstakes nominated - nope. If there were two with all else being equal - would I buy the sweepstakes nominated - yep.

We have these long diatribes on ridecamp every month or so on breeding. We know your view on the topic. We hear it every month over and over and over. Isn't time to move on to something of general interest. From what I see many of your post should be in the ridecamp classified section since you spend a lot of time pimping your own horses.

This horse was well bred - even sweepstakes nominated,

To some of us the connection of "well bred" and "sweepstakes
nominated" send up red flags. "Well bred" for WHAT exactly?

There certainly ARE well bred horses that are sweeps nominated,
but the majority of the sweeps program is aimed at the show ring, so
the majority of sweeps horses are show bred (and mostly halter
since that's where the big bucks and glory are).

I have to ditto what Nicole is saying here. When these two phrases appear in the same sentence, I read it to mean "horse has famous show ring names in the pedigree" rather than "well-bred" in the sense to do a good job as a riding horse. The two used to be related, but they are becoming further and further separated as the show ring fads become more and more extreme.

Most folks who are breeding good riding lines don't give a rap about
sweepstakes, since endurance and other sorts of open competition are the
main aims for such horses. Additionally, given the up-front expense of
nominating for sweepstakes and the fact that most folks don't want to pay
anything for endurance horses, it simply is not financially feasible to
nominate all one's young endurance prospects. I can't think of ANYONE
that I'd consider buying an endurance horse from (or sending anyone else
to buy an endurance horse from) who participates in the sweepstakes
program. There may be one or two, but none come to mind.
