[RC] Buying endurance prospects - Jena WilliamsI guess this is another one of those issues that really can stir people up. I guess your choice of purchase is as individual as the horse you buy. I don't think you can really compare the auction horse to the carefully bred. But you can compare "rejects" to the typical "private party" sale horse. Private party can be better than auction purchase because you have the opportunity to ride the horse first, and maybe get a vet check. But this can give the buyer a false sense of security. I have heard too many stories about people buying PP and still having to pay for sleeper issues later. I personally would not pay more than 2x auction value for a private party horse.Am I going to find a "top ten" horse that can go for years and years at the auction? Probably not. Can I afford to buy a horse that has generations of care and selective breeding? Again, no. Heck I can't even afford to buy a horse out of the newspaper; and am thrilled to *finally* have my beater truck/trailer to get me places! My goals are to go down the trail with my horse, husband and friends. I chose to try endurance because it does not require a $1000 outfit for me to even try. I may never even do "real" endurance (50+ miles) because the commitment it requires. I just hope to enjoy and maybe complete a few rides every once in a while and meet like minded people.
