Re: [RC] RE:Horses!!! stop with the... - Bette Lamore
We were on the part of our race track that was very hard from our
truck driving over it (not where the horses exercised) and
somehow my body was NOT going to hit the DG so I wound up doing
a somersault and landing on my feet with the reins still in my
hand--- how it happened, I have NO idea. The instructor looked
at me and said "Nice dismount!" and I nodded as though it was my
idea---- NOT! I guess there are some advantages to having more
"air time" :-)

I did a similar dismount once. :)

I was cantering along on a 14.2 Egyptian/CMK gelding I used to
have and some dogs that he *knew* were there (since they were
always there) started barking at us and he gave a mighty buck and
I went straight up and ended up on my feet standing directly in
front of him still holding the reins. Unfortunately, he then
reared, pulled the reins out of my startled hands and ran for
home, leaving me standing there in full chaps in summer heat to
run after him...

I think that may literally be the only time an actual buck has
caused me to have an unplanned dismount. I've had horses scoot
out from under me, and had jumping-related incidents (never seemed
to actually involve the jump itself), and a few ponying-while-
bareback incidents (I know I know), but I really can't think of
another *bucking* induced dismount. I guess it helps that my critters
don't generally buck, and never with the aim of getting rid of
me. :)
