Re: [RC] height of horses - Jody Rogers-Buttram

Hey guys,

I recently bred to a 16' Arabian stud.  I had a young mare that was 14.2 at the time of breeding, the foal is here now, and I am not sure that she will mature to what I have expected.  He (the stallion) was a true 16'.  I am kinda like someone else here on RC that has a built in "measure stick".  He is the biggest boned, largerest Arab I have ever seen.  He really is 16 hands.  I only hope that the foal (5 months now) will grow to be something over 15.1.

Jody, who likes the larger horses

No kidding! I have a couple of 16 hand Oldenburg mares at my
house right now being bred to my stallion and they are HUGE. Even
my 6' 210lb husband keeps calling them "way too big." I really can't
imagine an Arabian that height, let alone with the substance to
go along with the added height. Nor do I really want to.

Not a single "16 hand" Arabian that I've seen in the flesh was
anywhere near the size of these mares.

And, on the substance issue (one near and dear to me), I am often
amazed at the Arabians I see that are a good hand or more taller
than my 14.1 mare, but whose bodies are smaller than hers -- not
just smaller in proportion, but just plain smaller. And I don't
consider her all that substantial compared to some of my others
at home.
