Don't forget that there are TWO different things called "scratches".  In the
desert irritation by the sun plus probably alkali soil is one.  The other is
a mixed fungus-bacterial skin infection (similar thing in humans is called
athletes foot or in SE Asia "Jungle Rot" {even worse than athletes foot}),
caused by the foot/pastern being in mud and wet most of the day.  I know
very little (just what I read on Ridecamp) about the desert type, I am
familiar with the fungus type and  the various ways it is treated.
