I wipe old grease off and regrease on a regular basis. I'm not sure that grit, drit or sand are a big issue, the grease just dries up and doesn't work after a little while. Wipe it off, clean it up and regrease. While you do that inspect it for cracks.

There is controversy about grease on trailer ball.  Some authorities say the sand and grit that gets on the ball, sticks to the grease and wears the ball faster.  Others say grease it.  Take your pick, but do inspect.
