RE: [RC] [RC] Sweet itch, ear tags and mosquitos - Mel Copeland

OK-I got home and checked the ear tags I have been using.
The brand I have is Commando defense sysetm insecticide cattle ear tag. The active ingredient is Ethion:0,0,0',0'-tetraethylS, S'-methylene bisphosphorodithioate.
The back of the box says that it is safe for calves 3 months and older (ear tags on younget ones will damage ears). It is safe for beef and lactating dairy cattle. It is toxic to fish.

It controls horn flies, including pyrethroid resistant populations, gulf coast ticks, spinose ear tick, face flies, lice, stable flies and house flies.

I DO NOT attach these to forelocks or around the eyes. My grandfather used to use them on his mules back in the day before he had a tractor. My vet did not see a problem with it. I had not thought of horses swishing tails on each other. If you have a concern but would like to try them out, talk to your vet and see what they have to say.

BTW-I bought mine at a local feed store.

Oh, and are there any mentors on this board???? I am in NE GA and need one!

Cheers,

Mel
