RE: [RC] Pigeon Fever What is it? - Howard Bramhall

Would regular sheath cleaning help to prevent this (pigeon fever)? If so, can you recommend which products to use?

Would a condom help? Those things can really stretch. (sorry, jk).

cya,
Howard (not my favorite activity with a horse, but, hey, someone has to do this; just make sure none of the non-horsey neighbors are watching when you do)

Corynebacterium pseudotuberculosis, spread by flies from contaminated
premises. Once it's in the soil of premises, pretty much impossible to
eradicate, so new flies pick it up and spread it further. There's no real
way to "prevent" it, except good hygiene around the barn and if a horse does
have it, he should be quarantined to one area easily disinfected (ie, a
stall with rubber mats as opposed to the general pasture). When the abscess
is lanced, catch the drippings into a bucket and dispose of down the drain,
not just into the manure pile.

Colorado has a lot of pigeon fever---we never just waited for an abscess to
burst on its own, especially in dairy cattle where it affects ongoing milk
production. If we thought reasonably sure it was abscess versus hematoma or
seroma or other lump, we aspirated a bit of fluid from the bump to verify
the contents, then lanced it, opened it up wide and flushed it with dilute
betadine until it was clean. Infusing the cavity with Cefa-Lak intramammary
antibiotic ointment was also helpful, but we rarely put the horse onto
systemic antibiotics. Usually just some bute for a day or so.

If I had a horse with abscesses that large and painful in his inguinal area,
I'd sedate him and lance/flush them in a heartbeat.

Susan Garlinghouse, DVM

Just curious, what exactly is pigeon fever and is there any way to prevent
it? Sounds very painful and very gross!

Chris & JJ(who doesn't want to get it at all :))
