Re: [RC] Equi-pac question - Elaine Delbeke

"Never let it get above an imaginary level line that would be from where the shoe is touching the hoof across the sole of the hoof. This stuff shouldn't be what is bearing the weight when the hoof is placed on the ground, that is the shoe's job."

A number of people on the 2004 XP used equipak, no mesh. Trick is to clean under the edge of the shoe, clean the sole well and be sure it is dry - and fill under the edge of the shoe and fill the foot up to about 1/4 to 1/8 inch below the plane of the shoe where it touches the ground. Some folks feel this gives sole support which they believe is natural to the horse. You can put less is but that does not seem to work as well. Make a dam with duct tape at the back of the foot, fill the frog, under the shoe and the sole, then duct tape over the whole foot, and either hold it to keep pak below shoe or set it on a board or something similar until cured.

Stays in 3 days to 3 weeks plus depending on horse, number of miles and terrain. Many on XP stayed in two to three weeks with riding every day or every other day. I just took the equi-pak out yesterday when I pulled the shoes off my horses after getting home - it was in three weeks on one and nearly four on the other.
