Re: [RC] Jiggy on the Trail. Need Suggestions... - Maryanne Stroud Gabbani

Oh my, I believe that I know a certain chestnut mare like this and if you get any sure fire solutions, I want to hear them. Mine is a young 17 yr old and she is intensely competitive, but due to a couple of nasty accidents, she hasn't the legs to live up to her own standards. Nevertheless, if she is in the desert and on the way home, the words "flat walk" just go whizzing through her ears, through her brain, and out the other side. I just learned to sit it and let her jig.

I am having a frustrating problem with 1 horse.... I cannot get
her to WALK on the trail when riding with other horses... she wants to
jig or do a really slow jog. She does not jig like this in the arenas at home,
nor when I am trail-riding by ourselves... only when with other horses.
I have tried stopping & facing other direction until she relaxes, I have tried
backing her up, I have tried "using" the energy & doing shoulder-ins
or haunches-in along the trail, I have tried picking up the reins/rope & doing
a "trombone" motion, I have tried relaxing every muscle & joint, I
have tried just walking the opposite direction down the trail.... she still doesn't
get it,
and will take maybe 3 walk steps, then start to jig again. What am I doing wrong?
What can I try to get her more relaxed? She also seems to start this jiggy
stuff when I am tired, or when we are headed BACK home (she KNOWS all the
trails really well!). Other than this I am real pleased with her.... anyone
have some constructive suggestions?
Thanks in advance,
:) J
