Re: [RC] horse buying/selling, making money - Truman Prevatt

You should tell him he should try to sell the sailboat for what he has in it - talk about a black hole for dollar bills.

here is one thing to think about  when you are figuring out how much money you put into raising horses to sell.  i know some of you wont agree with me on this point, but it makes sense to me.  if feed and vet bills are  costs, stud fees and mare maintenance are costs,  fine, but dont forget to factor in the benefits.  you get to ride the horse and use it, so you have to allow for that.  dont know exactly how much you want to figure in for that, but i would say that if you are claiming $5000 in expenses for a horse that you have trained to ride and is old enough to sell,  back out, oh, lets say $1500 worth of enjoyment that you got out of the horse during the time you were raising it, riding it and playing.  sell the horse for $3500, and be glad that you did someone a good turn.  put the $3500 into your farm account and spend it as you please.
a friend of mine bought a horse for $1200.  kept it two years, paid for training, board and feed, had to have corrective shoeing done.  got a sailboat and a different girlfriend and hasnt ridden the horse but once or twice, now wants to sell him, for $2500.  says he just wants to get his money back.  i told him, if you just want your money back, try to get the $1200, the rest is on you.   he doesnt understand.    ed
