Well clearly this vet hasn't met one of my horses. We have to blanket him when it gets below 40. He needs a lot more feed in the winter than the summer. We even give his some alfalfa when it gets cold. On the other hand we have one or two that would have no problem going down to may the single digits (which we can get every once in a while) without much problem and we have a few inbetween the extremes.

So just like anything they are all individuals and have to be treated as such.

I just heard a vet lecture on winter feeding last night. Horses are much
 cooler animals, our forty degree weather is about seventy degrees to
them! Only  increase feed if temp is at zero or below, and hay is the
best thing for it. We  feed beet pulp and oil in the winter as well, but
he thinks it's not a  necessity!
