I believe Icthomal is black tar based.  It is a drawing agent.  It should help 
slow down any stone bruise that may develop.  I have used it as follows:
Clean bottom of hoof as best you can, depending on patience of horse.
Smear ample amount of Icthomal onto bottom of hoof, using 4x4 gauze pad.  Place 
another 4x4 pad on top of that.  Put Easy Boot on to protect the hoof. The 
gauze pads will make it easy to remove the boot and re-medicate when you meed 
to. I usually left it on and repeated above every other day or so.
I never had a sling strap on an Easy Boot get melted by Icthomal.  Extra slings 
are available directly from Easy Boot.  I have a supply of them, along with the 
Chicago screws to attach them.  I don't recall that the price was unreasonable.
