RE: [RC] Completion Awards - Mcgann, Barbara

Starts to blur...the line between promotional items and prizes, doesn't it.
Some people look at clothing with logos on them as free advertising for the
event. RM's would like to get lots of their shirts out there being worn and
talked about, so give them to volunteers, participants, whatever. And, I've
got to admit that I have taken T-shirts many times as a volunteer because I
felt I was contributing to the ride, and don't mind advertising that ride and
endurance in general.

The dilemma comes because riders want some memento that says "I DID IT", "I put
in the extra time, effort, money and was skilled enough to finish the ride when
others didn't". Its hard, though, to find the $ to give out both T-shirts for
"participants - riders and volunteers and ride officials" AND to give
completion awards.

My own personal view is that the prize is just not very important. I ride for
the personal satisfaction and I KNOW that I finished, I came in 10th, I won the
Region, etc. I have dozens of belt buckles that sit home in a drawer - no-one
ever sees them, I have tens of dozens of t-shirts that I wear day in, day out,
I have shelves of painted rocks, plaques, doodads that hardly anyone ever sees.
The best prizes are the buckets, sponges, blankets, cooler-scarves that will
actually go in my trailer and be used at the future rides!

Gosh, now I feel bad. I volunteered at a ride for the first time to get some
more hands-on experience with endurance rides before I actually compete.
They gave me a shirt (they gave t-shirts to everyone, including volunteers, so
it wasn't a "completion" award) that I wear alot. But I guess people that see
me wearing it who didn't go to that particular ride might assume I completed
the ride.
So maybe next time I wear it I should first take a permanent marker and write
on the back of it(I'll have more room that way):
"I didn't win this ride, I didn't complete this ride, I didn't even RIDE this
ride...I just enjoyed it."

...Needless to say, when I saw
one of my non-horsey friends wearing one just because they KNEW somebody
affiliated with our Arabian Horse Association, it flew all over me. I told
her outright that she didn't have any right to be wearing that shirt because
she had not earned it. That is honestly how I feel.

It is just my opinion that the mentality of giving a ride shirt (bag,
sponge, mug, etc. . .) to anyone who shows up only adds to the ever-growing
mentality of some riders that the ride owes you something other than a place
to come and enjoy the sport.
