horse eyesight/RE: [RC] [RC] [RC] Tevis - headlamps??? - Laurie Durgin

After reading those areticles two things come to mind. One is the storye of the two dressage horses on the bit that ran into each other. Remembering how many long distance riders let the horse choose his own position, so he can see where he is going.(course if you hve bad footing, you might want him on the bit. And about trailer loading, black mats and dark trailers, no wonder some refuse to go in.

The horse's eyes seem to adjust much more rapidly than mine & they'll quickly take off again.

I had always heard horses' vision adjusts more slowly than humans. According to various sources I went to online, it takes approximately 15 minutes for horses' vision to adjust when moving between differently lighted environments. It does stand to reason that if a horse's eyes are sensitive to weak light - which is why they can see practically as well at night as they can during the day - that it would be easy to temporarily blind them with artificial light at night while those pupils are fully dilated.

People must decide for themselves whether to use a flashlight or glowlights or any artificial lights on the trail after dark, but remember, when you use those lights around other people and their horses, you are making a decision *for* them, not giving them a choice, and your decision might not be what they would choose.

Asking a rider to close his/her eyes while you ride by with a flashlight is not going to help their horse's night vision at all.
