==========================================

Just thought I would comment on this too :)

I am attempting my first Tevis this year (!!!3 weeks!!!) and last wednesday
night rode from the 49 crossing to the finish line with a friend- we didnt get
to do it last saturday on the full moon because my horse threw a shoe and we
figured there would still be some moon left. Well, there was no moon at all (we
got out there around 10 or 10:30) but I had two glowsticks on and didnt worry
too much about it. However, my friend didnt have glowsticks on and he was up
front and mine were throwing his vision off. So when we hit No Hands, I took
mine off and we rode into Auburn without any light whatsoever. It was my first
time w/out glowsticks, and I had an absolute blast! My horse did great and
never took a misstep, and it was a good trust building exercise and bonding
experience for me with him as well. I was amazed at how dark the "Black Hole of
Calcutta" really is, and there was nothing like riding along under the great
canopy of stars with the river serenading you below. And the canyons are just
as beautiful at night as they are in the day. Sigh...

...Point is, for me, I felt that with or without glowsticks, the horses do
great. The glowsticks sometimes cast weird shadows that confuse me (and I'm
guessing may confuse the horse?) when they are very bright and dangle...so I'm
thinking that for Tevis (I think I want to use them on the Cal loop and perhaps
ditch 'em at No Hands) I'll use the smaller, dimmer ones and make sure they're
securely fastened to the breastcollar.

But I figure that either way actually having a MOON will help *vbg* :)

And God bless and God speed to all of you traveling from afar for the Tevis as
well as to ALL who are competing! Let's DO this thing!!!

(and come by and say hi to me at Echo Valley Ranch in Auburn when you get here
to get your electrolytes, hay, etc...we'll take care of you very well, I
promise!)

~Hannah
