RE: [RC] Western States 50 Accident - Mary Abbott

"Quite honestly, I don't need to know anything more about what happened at
the WS50 because I know..."

Yet, you weren't there.

"...ultimately, the responsibility for the safety of one's own horse lies

the vet, not the ride management, not other riders on the trail."

Then why do we have the AERC? What is it's purpose? Just to tabulate
points? Do our horses just say "Hey, let's meet at Devil's Thumb, run along
cliffs, cross a river and race 50 miles to Auburn tomorrow?"!! Who sets the
stage for these events? That organization needs to take some responsibility
for that set up. Otherwise, why does it exist?

Quite honestly, I don't need to know anything more about what happened at
the WS50 because what I already know is this: You practice, you prepare as
best you can, you keep your head about you, and you accept the fact that
there are always going to be risks involved. Ideally, a person who chooses
to become involved with any equine sport understands that ultimately, the
responsibility for the safety of one's own horse lies with the rider - not
the vet, not the ride management, not other riders on the trail.
