RE: [RC] [RC] WS 50 ACCIDENT WE WERE THERE - Lynn Kinsky

Bad idea to have your own safety and that of your horse depend on someone else. In that situation problems might have been avoided if the woman who was being tailgated should have pulled off the trail and refused to go on until the man on the grey passed. I do that when I'm being tailgated while driving a car, and I've done it when riding a horse.

It bears repeating: Bad idea to have your own safety and that of your horse depend on someone else.

First you have to have a place to pull off!

I had a similar experience at my first 50 attempt, at Pine Valley. I was half way down a rocky knife ridge trail when a hot shoe LD-er (and let's not go there -- I usually ride LD <g>) came zooming up on my mare's butt, and stayed there. She was freaking, but I didn't want her to kick (she had a red ribbon) -- not out of concern for the other horse, but because it could have sent both of us over the edge. There simply wasn't any place to pull off for a couple hundred yards -- and I screamed that at the guy, who refused to pull back. Eventually, we got to a point where I could find a few feet to perch on on the side of the trail and he zoomed on his way -- but not before ,my thoroughly distracted mare took a misstep in the rocks and got a suspensory pull that caused us to pull at the next vet check. The tailgater finished -- we didn't.
