[RC] tendon/ligament training - rides2far

Looks like I'm going to ride my neice's horse this fall since she's
getting married and can't take him where she's moving.

Here's the deal, he's been everybody's back up horse, or in some way an
endurance horse for 9 years, but never really campaigned. He's done at
least one ride almost every year since 1995. He's got 620 miles, 19
starts, 14 finishes. Three of those pulls were due to what turned out to
be a loose floating splint chip aggravating a ligament and he had surgery
to remove the chip. I rode him in his first 2 50's. I know he went
pretty slow till his third year when he showed some speed when actually
conditioned some. The majority of his slow rides he was more or less
"pulled out of the field" and did well considering. Had no trouble being
a completer, but there aren't a whole lot of conditioning miles
represented in those completions. I have got the theory though that
there's a "shock the system & rest afterward" technique that seems to
work to some extent and that's sort of what he's had...life as a backup
horse.

So here's the question...are his tendons & ligaments conditioned? Did
they hold any conditioning that they had? I know I can get his muscles in
shape in 90 days or so and he's the sort that does a lot of self
conditioning so he looks pretty good even though he's been goofing off,
but what I want to know is how much like an untrained horse do I have to
treat him as far as tendons & ligaments go? He's 15.

in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside,
thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming --WOW-- what
a ride !! "
