Re: [RC] overheating - John Teeter========================================== Please Reply to: Rebecca Bianchi rebecca_bianchi@xxxxxxxxxxxxx or ridecamp@xxxxxxxxxxxxx I have a large Spanish Arab that has thick, dark skin, and a relatively thick summer coat. He has done two 25's and two 50's. The problem I am seeing is that he is fine in cool weather, quite forward and happy, but when the heat of the day hits and we have lots of climbs left he wants to quit. ==== My Benji (1/2 Morgan, 1/4 qh, 1/4 arab) and Steph's Kruschev (1/2 Orlov, 1/2 Arab) both have this problem. Lots of conditioning in the heat is basically the strategy we're using. Develop the (skin) surface level circulation to optimize the heat transfer. Benji isn't there yet (planning on his first 100 at the HOT aug 28 Arabian Nights ride). Kruschev has been there, and is coming back (also planning on 100 at arabian nights). We're in the 90df+ weather now, so we have 8 weeks to bring them both forward. Basically lots of work during the hottest part of the day. but then, I'm the techie, not the horse guy:) jt. ============================================================ If you treat an Arab like a Thoroughbred, it will behave like a Quarter horse. ~ Libby Llop ridecamp.net information: http://www.endurance.net/ridecamp/ ============================================================
