Re: [RC] Saddle Fit Question - Chris Paus

There are some saddles that even though they appear to
fit correctly, the horse still doesn't like them.

I had that with Star and a Wintec dressage with CAIR
panels. I was sure this saddle was perfect for him.
The sweat patterns were the best I've ever seen on
him.

But every time I approached him with that saddle, he
put his ears back, switched his tail and when he was
tacked up, he definitely avoided having me get on him.

I did a 30 mile CTR in that saddle. At the end of the
ride, he had a BAD case of heat scald .HIs skin
bubbled up and it took weeks to heal his back.

He was trying to tell me!

I watch the horse when I tack up. He'll tell you if he
likes the saddle! Also, I get regular chiro checkups
on my riding horses and on MYSELF.

My young mare recently went through a misbehavior
period and I wondered what was wrong. I took myself to
the chiro and he told me that my right hip was so out
of place, it was almost 1 inch higher than the left!

She was feeling my uneavenness and it bothered her!..

The next time I rode her she was an angel... I was
straight again!

I have a very tall and wide Quarter Horse with High
withers. I purchased a
Tucker Endurance Saddle which was customized for
him. There were issues in
the beginning with dry spots in the withers. The
saddle was sent back and
fixed and seemed fine after that. No more dry spots
? pretty evenly wet
underneath. BTW ? I ride with a SaddleRight pad.

I haven?t been conditioning my horse as hard as I
was earlier in the year
(time restraints) so I know his shape is changing,
getting a little more
plump with all the grass.

I?ve been noticing lately that when I go to saddle
him he gets very dancy in
the cross ties along with his walk slowing down.
Everything I?ve read and
heard says this is his way of telling me he doesn?t
like it or it hurts.
Opinions?..please. The other night I took him out
for a ride and it was
pretty much 5 miles of walking. When I removed the
saddle I could see on
both sides of his spine a perfect dry spot of the
entire tree ? it looked
almost like a dry figure 8 on both sides. I?ve
never seen this before and I
assume this is not good. Open to any
advice/suggestions on what to do.

Thanks much,

Wendy

There must be a full understanding between the horse and rider for entry
into the top competition brackets. There must be a confidence established
that the desired position is attainable. There must be a caring for the
horse, on the part of the owner, so as to not exceed the physical limits in
the heat of competition. There must be a well planned training program that
will result in the necessary equine attributes.
