RE: [RC] Horse canters when asked to Trot - heidi

I have a horse that loves to canter, but only until recently, when I had
a custom saddle made for him would he stay in an extended trot. Since he
has his new saddle he loves to stay in a nice smooth extended trot for
minutes now vs.seconds. I'm sure the other saddle was pinching his
shoulders as he moved. He cantered to avoid the pinching.

I agree that refusal to trot can be a pain or impingement issue other than
a lameness--in other words, they may well take both leads freely at a
canter.

If a horse simply prefers to canter when the pace picks up a bit, that's
one thing--he's a natural canterer. But no matter how free and nice his
canter, if he just flat doesn't want to trot at all, something is wrong.
Could be saddle fit as above, or could be some other form of back pain.

Heidi
